About COSSFEST

Authoritative speakers and an expo come together to gather and share information about Free and Open Source Software. Professionals, enthusiasts, and anyone interested in taking part are welcome to attend COSSFEST.

COSSFEST began in 2006 as an effort by the Calgary Linux Users Group and was called the "Calgary LinuxFest 2006". With the success of that event, the following year saw a growth in both size and topics covered and was renamed to the "Calgary Open Source Systems Festival" (aka COSSFEST). COSSFEST 2007 was also a success and prompted calls for another such event.

Unfortunately, life commitments for the various volunteers caused a delay in the planning of the 2008 event. So a choice was made to delay the event, rather than rush the planning, and COSSFEST 2009 took place in April of 09.

COSSFEST 2009 saw the introduction of a number of new items - new venue, new format, expaned focus, and more. Taking what worked for 2009, we are now planning COSSFEST 2010 for April 9th and 10th.

Part of the growth of COSSFEST has required the implementation of some limited management structures. A non-profit foundation has been created for this purpose. This foundation is officially known as the "Calgary Open Source Systems Foundation" (or the "COSSFEST-Foundation" for short), and is intended to be the guiding organization for COSSFEST and other events to promote Open Source Software. Details about the foundation, including the current directors can be found on the Foundation's website at http://cossfest-foundation.org.
